I also have my gripes with ESO but they are way less than those of GW2 (besides them revamping every class every other week it seems, screwing your builds and gear sets). I loved GW1 and was psyched when GW2 came out, but the game has become a huge chore compared to other MMOs I've played just because of all these weird things added just to pad out the game (grind a map hard for currencies, living stories forcing you to grind events to progress, maps sucking ass to traverse with no flying mount to make you take much longer). Glider was a fine addition except on those maps that force you to use it constantly (in Heart of Thorns, better not miss and fall all the way down). Lastly, the new maps are either WAY too vertical or disjointed to try and coax you into grinding a Skyscale or Griffon or switch between 3 different mounts to get from A to B. The gameplay is fun enough but it got repetitive since only so many skills are actually viable for what I play (Necro). My inventory and bank are constantly filling up with shit consumables and currencies, and skins, and collectables, and all sorts of random junk that detract from me just playing. The game was great for a while but I'm not a fan of the whole "new map, new currencies" mechanic they have going on. I played GW2 from launch, did all the content up to chapter 1 of Icebrood Saga. You can eventually play all three stories with one character. Daggerfall Covenant has too many desert themed areas in my opinion. Ebonheart Pact would be next with the variety and might be more appealing to Elder Scrolls longtime fans. Razum-dar is the best and the scenery is very pretty.

Maybe buy the Maelstrom DLC if you really are into it after.Īldmeri Dominion has the best starting story in my opinion. If you have plenty of time to play, I recommend getting the membership to gain access to everything, play all the story stuff you like, then cancel (you keep any benefits or skill lines you gain from them).

Just don't get hung up on how the main story is and just explore the smaller areas for the side stories (small areas, Dark Brotherhood questline, Thieves Guild line, etc.). In short, it plays a lot like a singleplayer game for the most part. There's a lot more in terms of rewards for doing side content compared to GW2 (unique transformations, costumes, armor skins, little cosmetic and interactable item rewards, etc.). I also like to take on World Bosses alone for a challenge or if no one is around (most can be soloed, with some care).

But there is one solo endgame content called The Maelstrom which is a series of arenas (9 or 10, can't remember even though I've done it dozens of times) and is fairly difficult if you are going for a no death run (special title for it). Each little area in a map will usually have a story that drives it and you have to help solve whereas in GW2 you have hearts which boil down to help me do some chores.Įndgame you won't be able to solo since dungeons are 4 player scaled and raids are 12 players if I remember correctly. The main stories not so much (like the single player games haha) but the side stuff can be top notch. The quality of the stories and voice acting is fairly on par with the single player Elder Scrolls games. The festival going on right now is the Festival of the Four Winds which has a bunch of races, a treasure looting event, solo boss fights that range from super easy to quite hard, and a large group event where you kill 6 bosses and do want to coordinate with other players, though it really only means splitting into even sized small groups and killing the 6 bosses at the same time which can sometimes mean having to hold dps if one team is behind. Outside of those, I also like to craft legendary weapons and do all the content in the various festivals when they come around.

I also do the WvW game mode solo and just run around taking objectives/skirmishing with whoever I come across.

There'll be tons of other player's around but you can still do your own thing, just alongside them. Many maps have bosses or what are called "meta" events that are super fun, rewarding, and don't require you to join a group. I play solo the vast majority of the time.
